Cortical Bone Modifications after Radiotherapy: Cortex Porosity and Osteonal Changes Evaluated Over Time

چکیده

Abstract Aiming to evaluate cortical bone microarchitecture and osteonal morphology after irradiation, twelve male New Zealand rabbits were used. The animals divided: control group (no radiation-NIr); 3 irradiated groups, sacrificed after: 7 (Ir7d); 14 (Ir14d) 21 (Ir21d) days. A single radiation dose of 30 Gy was Computed microtomography analyzed the microarchitecture: thickness (CtTh), volume (BV), total porosity (Ct.Po), intracortical (CtPo-cl), channel/pore number (Po.N), fractal dimension (FD) degree anisotropy (Ct.DA). After scan, histologically assessed by means: area perimeter osteons (O.Ar; O.p) Haversian canals (C.Ar; C.p). Microtomographic analysis performed ANOVA, followed Tukey Dunnet tests. Osteon analyses Kruskal-Wallis, test Dunn’s. Cortical significant difference (p<0.010) between NIr with thicker cortex at Ir7d (1.15±0.09). revealed (p<0.001) groups NIr, lower value for (0.29±0.09). Bone in Ir14d compared control. Area statistically different (p<0.0001) Ir7d. also values (80.57±9.3; 31.63±6.5) groups. affected radiation, effects appear be time-dependent, mostly regarding initial Cortex structure Ir21d similarities suggesting that resembles normal condition a period.

Relative Effects of Collagen Fiber Orientation, Mineralization, Porosity, and Percent and Population Density of Osteonal Bone on Equine Cortical Bone Mechanical Properties in Mode-specific Loading

INTRODUCTION Predominant collagen fiber orientation (CFO) can significantly influence the mechanical properties of cortical bone (e.g., Martin and Ishida, 1989; Martin and Broadman, 1993; Riggs et al., 1993). Previous studies have demonstrated that CFO is a strong predictor of tensile, compressive, or bending strength. Few of these studies, however, have examined the relative effects of CFO, m...

Repair of Microdamage in Osteonal Cortical Bone Adjacent to Bone Screw

Up to date, little is known about the repair mode of microdamage in osteonal cortical bone resulting from bone screw implantation. In this study, self-tapping titanium cortical bone screws were inserted into the tibial diaphyses of 24 adult male rabbits. The animals were sacrificed at 1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after surgery. Histomorphometric measurement and confocal microscopy were ...

Cortical Tissue Porosity of Brittle Osteogenesis Imperfecta Bone

INTRODUCTION There is currently no cure for the skeletal dysplasia osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a debilitating disease that occurs in approximately 1 in every 20,000 human births. OI is caused by a genetic mutation that results in brittle bones and many fractures. In a mouse model of the disease, oim, we have characterized bone structure using X-ray microtomography, and found that oim bone has...

Impact of the porous microstructure on the overall elastic properties of the osteonal cortical bone.

Mechanical properties of bones are largely determined by their microstructure. The latter comprises a large number of diverse pores. The present paper analyzes a connection between structure of the porous space of the osteonal cortical bone and bone's overall anisotropic elastic moduli. The analysis is based on recent developments in the theory of porous materials that predict the anisotropic e...

A new WNT on the bone: WNT16, cortical bone thickness, porosity and fractures.

The last decade has provided abundant data implicating the WNT pathway in bone development and in the regulation of skeletal homeostasis. Rare human mutations together with gain- and loss-of-function approaches in mice have clearly demonstrated that disrupted regulation of this pathway leads to altered bone mass. In addition to these rare human and mice mutations, large population-based genome-...
